Workshop Descriptions

One workshop will be an introduction to DADGAD tuning on the guitar, which is very suitable for accompanying
mountain dulcimers, but also for Celtic music and folk music in general.   The basic chord shapes require only 1
or 2 fingers, so DADGAD is easier to play than standard tuning.   You will learn how to tune and set up your
instrument for this kind of playing.    Essential scales will be demonstrated.   Beginner guitar players should be
able to pick up quickly on this tuning, and the more experienced guitar players will be shown some extra pointers
and skills.

Paul taught this workshop at Kentucky Music Week in June, and word is that "light bulbs" turned on in folks there
who were learning this tuning and how to use it.   Paul suggest that you bring a steel string guitar, a chromatic
tuner (
NOT one that only recognizes EADGBE), picks (medium or light, not heavy), and a capo.

The other workshop will be in standard guitar tuning and will focus on backup techniques for waltzes and jigs, right
hand patterns for accompaniment, chords with no thirds, plus some time at the end of the workshop for
participants to ask for help with guitar skills and any issues/problems/questions they might have.

Paul will provide handouts that you can take home to help you remember what was covered in the workshops.  He
will also provide a handout that describes what learning tools are available on the market and the internet to
continue exploring the world of DADGAD on your own.
